UCR Black Alumni in Entertainment. Please reach out to these undergraduates!
In 2004, as freshman at the University of California Riverside, Sean (Smoov) McBride of Los Angeles, Eric (Smokey) Tucker of San Diego, and Jared (JayB) Baisley of San Francisco, began to write songs amongst themselves. Soon their music caught the ear of a local producer who felt that the young men had something more to offer. It wasn’t long until this group of college buddies began to call themselves “Jus-t’us”. After a number of studio sessions and the recruitment of an up and coming management team, Jus-t’us released their first self-titled album in the fall of 2005. In the years that followed, the three slowly matured and began to shy away from the conventional sounds of the day and began to focus on a melodic and orchestral feel. This experimentation led the trio to work with Warner Brothers in the scoring and production of the feature film “Traces of Tragedy” in 2007. After a brief hiatus, the group felt led to once again explore a new direction. This time the trio would extend its arms to the musical stylings of a full band; embracing the control and wonder of live musicianship.
2009 is truly the year of Jus-t’us. Already dubbed “MySpace Artist of The Week,” songs such as “Butterflies” and “Sunshine” solidify this talented bunch as a force to be reckoned with. Surely it is no wonder why they refer to themselves as “the past, the present, and the future.”

The 22nd Annual Tomás Rivera Conference
The 22nd Annual Tomás Rivera Conference will Feature Screenwriter Ligiah Villalobos’ film "Under the Same Moon" and will be screened at the event celebrating Chicano Latino literature and arts.
Screenwriter Ligiah Villalobos, who wrote "Under the Same Moon" ("La Misma Luna"), will be the keynote speaker at the 22nd annual Tomás Rivera Conference on Friday, April 24, at the University of California, Riverside.
Among the highlights of the annual event are an art installation of a life-size car made of burlap, "My ’61 Ford," by Adán Avalos, an exhibition of previously unreleased photos of Rivera and other Hispanic writers by Michael Sedano, screenwriting workshops by Villalobos, and the screening of Villalobos’ "Under the Same Moon."
All events will be held on the UCR campus, and are free and open to the public. Parking costs $6.
The 2009 conference has as its theme "From the Fields to the Stars" and commemorates the 25th anniversary of the death of Tomás Rivera, a Chicano poet, educator and UCR’s chancellor from 1979 to 1984. He was the first Hispanic and first minority chancellor in the UC system, and also, at 43, the youngest person ever appointed to lead a UC campus. He died in 1984 after a heart attack.
"So many things have come together for this most heartfelt conference in honor of the 25th anniversary of Rivera’s passing – the availability and genius of Ligiah Villalobos, the daring of Adán Avalos, the new script by Carlos Cortés, the generous photography collection donated by Michael Sedano and the hard-working Tomás Rivera Conference Committee, the engine of this program. And, of course, Mrs. Concha Rivera’s vision," said Juan Felipe Herrera, Tomás Rivera Chair in creative writing and conference organizer. "Each hour of the conference day will be a star for all to see."
Conference events start at 8 a.m. when Adán Avalos will begin the installation of his life-size burlap car in the lawn area outside the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Building, where most conference activities will take place. Avalos, the son of farm workers, recently was the resident artist at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, Calif.
At noon, the Flor y Canto (Flower and Song) Chicano Literature Festival archives will be inaugurated in Special Collections and Archives on the fourth floor of the Tomás Rivera Library. Rivera attended the first Flor y Canto National Chicano Literature Festival held at University of Southern California in November 1973. An original photo collection will be displayed featuring images of Rivera and other early Chicano writers at that groundbreaking festival. Michael Sedano, the donor and photographer, will be present.
Villalobos will conduct three screenwriting workshops from 1 to 4:15 p.m. in the Interdisciplinary Building screening room. The sessions will focus on the structure of the half-hour comedy, the one-hour drama and the full-length screenplay. Villalobos has been the head writer of the Nickelodeon series "Go, Diego! Go!" and previously directed all television production and development in South America for The Walt Disney Co.
A 5 p.m. reception outside Interdisciplinary 1020 will include music by local guitarist Hector Ceballos. Activities will move inside at 6:15 p.m. with Carlos Cortés, UCR professor emeritus of history, performing an original dramatic solo in homage to Rivera, followed by a screening of "Under the Same Moon." A question-and-answer period with Villalobos will follow.
Nigeria Sends More Students to U.S. Colleges and Universities Than Any Other Black African Nation
In 2008 there were 35,654 Africans studying in the United States. They made up 5.7 percent of all foreign students in the U.S. Among black African nations, Nigeria in 2007-08 sent the most students to American colleges and universities. In 2007-08, 6,222 Nigerians were studying here. Nigerian enrollments are up by more than one third over the past five years. Kenya ranked second, sending 5,838 students to the United States.
Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Tanzania, Cameroon, and Ethiopia each had more than 1,000 students studying in this nation. Zambia, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Angola, and Senegal all sent at least 500 students to study at U.S. colleges and universities.
All told, 49 black African nations had college students studying in the U.S. during the 2007-08 academic year.

UCR Author Wins Guggenheim Award- News about UCR Black Faculty & Staff!
Abani, an award-winning poet, novelist and playwright, said he was honored to receive the award.
“The Guggenheim is such a prestigious honor that I am a little lost for words,” Abani said. “It is always humbling when your work as a writer gets recognized, but when it is by an institution that has given the same award to artists, photographers, intellectuals and writers that I have been in awe of, it is a double honor. I am glad to receive this for me and for the University of California, Riverside, that has given me such a nurturing home.”
Charles Whitney, chair of the UCR Department of Creative Writing, said the honor was richly deserved.
“Abani is one of the brightest lights among young writers of fiction and poetry in the country, and the Guggenheim will allow him to travel in pursuit of his next novel,” Whitney said.
Abani has published five novels, three plays and four collections of poetry. Among his awards are: a Lannan Literary Fellowship; a PEN Beyond the Margins Award; a Lamada Award nomination; a Pushcart nomination for poetry; a New York Times Editor’s Choice award; a New York Libraries Books for Teens Selection award; and a PEN Hemingway Book Prize.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded fellowships this year to 180 artists, scholars and scientists from almost 3,600 applicants in the United States and Canada. Guggenheim fellows are appointed on the basis of stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment, according to the foundation. Since 1925, the foundation has granted more than $273 million in fellowships to nearly 16,700 individuals.
